On September the 5th 1987 Amsterdam wrote history. Near the Westerkerk, a unique and impressive monument was unveiled ‘to inspire and support homosexual men and women in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination.
LGBTs from the Netherlands and abroad put flowers on one of the triangles, remember their deceased loved ones, celebrate their marriage, meet friends at parties, gather for protest meetings or start actions.
In honor of the monument IHLIA developed the exhibition Monument of Pride in 2007, where different people were interviewed about the meaning of this monument in their lives. On this site you can read their stories and you can see the interviews.
The monument makes homosexuality visible in the public space. How different it was in the time of the homosexual, Jewish writer Jacob Israel de Haan (1881-1924) where about homosexuality must be spoken in veiled terms. From him is the line ‘Such an immense craving for friendship‘ that is on the monument.
